THE FIRST CHAPTER · 1 OF 3

A stock is a piece of a business.

When you buy a share of stock, you own a small part of a company. A ticker symbol is simply the shorthand used to identify that company’s stock on an exchange.

It helps to start with the business behind the symbol: What does it offer? Who are its customers? How does it make money?

A simple example

Imagine a fictional company divided into 1,000 equal shares. Owning 10 shares would represent 1% ownership. This simplified example explains ownership, not what those shares are worth.
